Books That Matter to Me, The Alchemist

A friend of mine gave me the book The Alchemist a few years ago, after sharing many conversations about the meaning of life, our destiny's, and our longing to be closer to our families and those that we love.

She wrote in the cover "Renee, I thought you would enjoy this story—it's about a journey that unfolds a dream... Enjoy."

While I was reading the book I couldn't help but do what I do naturally, flagging pages with words that inspired me and underlining phrases I wanted to remember. The completion of this story goes down in history for me personally as a book that has contributed significant change to my life. There are a handful of these books that I'll share over time starting with this one. For those of you that have never read The Alchemist, I will summarize.

Its a story about faith, power, and the courage we all have within to pursue the intricate path of our “personal legends”, a path charted by the mysterious magnet of destiny but obscured by distractions. We learn to trust our hearts, read the seemingly inconspicuous signs, and understand that as we look to fulfill a dream, it looks to find us just the same... if we let it.

I'd like to share some of the lessons provided to me through the words on the pages of this book. I hope you find appreciation in these thoughts, theories and ideas as well.

In creating our “personal legends”, "whenever we do something that fills us with enthusiasm, were are following our legend". Sometimes though, "there comes a time when our personal calling is so deeply buried in our soul as to be invisible. But it's still there." And always remember, "we do not realize that those who genuinely wish us well want us to be happy and are prepared to accompany us on that journey."

Life will never be easy but, "the secret to life is to fall seven times and to get up eight times." And "even though I complain sometimes, it's because I'm the heart of a person and people's hearts are that way. People are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don't deserve them, or that they'll be unable to achieve them".

Believe in yourself because, "courage is the quality most essential to understanding the language of the world".

Dreams do come true and, "it's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting."

To build an honest work ethic I buy into this sentiment, "if you start out promising what you don't even have yet, you'll lose your desire to work toward getting it". And I whole-heartedly agree that, "there is only one way to learn. It's through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey". One of the greatest pieces of advice,"eat when it is time to eat. And move along when it is time to move along."

Simply put, "when each day is the same as the next, it's because people fail to recognize the good things that happen in their lives every day that the sun rises". And I believe this to be true, "When we are loved, we always strive to become better than we are."

Signing Off Letting Dreams Unfold,
Renee
