It’s been a week since Jay Z announced on his blog that he and Queen B were kicking off a 22-day vegan challenge. Beyonce has taken to social media with Instagram photos of her meals using the hashtag #22daysvegan, while also donning outfits of the food she can’t eat. Case in point: a pepperoni-pizza ensemble, cow-print sweater, and even some fur and leather.
Marco Borges, longtime life coach of the power couple who inspired Jay to take the vegan plunge, revealed some surprising things about the duo’s new diet to SHAPE.
1. Before committing to this challenge, Jay-Z attempted eating vegan breakfasts.
A few months ago, Borges challenged Jay to go plant-based just for his morning meal. “It started first with me saying, 'Do you think you could do one plant-based meal a week?'” Borges says. “He said he could do it easily, which was very shortly followed by something more challenging: plant-based breakfast for a month. He actually loved it.” Jay’s go-to breakfast is oatmeal cooked with water or almond milk and topped with fresh berries or nuts. As an alternative, he'll make a smoothie made of almond milk, spinach, 1 frozen banana, 1 scoop almond butter, and 2 scoops Borges’ protein powder.
2. The entire challenge was Jay-Z’s idea.
While Borges was the initial inspiration behind occasional plant-based meals, Jay-Z pushed the full challenge himself. “We wrapped the tour in Europe, and when I got home, I got a call from Jay saying he wanted to go vegan for 22 days straight,” Borges says. “He said he wanted to challenge himself and asked me for help with meal plans. Obviously B said they both wanted to do it, and they decided on their own that they wanted to share it with the world.”
3. No word on Blue Ivy’s involvement in the challenge.
While some celebs adopt vegan or vegetarian diets for their children, Borges couldn’t speak to Blue’s involvement.
4. Leather is taking a back seat for now.
“Wearing leather has come up,” Borges says. “We’ve addressed it and we want people to know that this is a great opportunity to share this challenge, so we’re focusing on what’s important: getting healthier, the wellness, and being kind to ourselves.”
5. Jay-Z has a bit of a sweet tooth.
There are days when Jay-Z has a chef (who is also adopting the diet), but if he’s on-the-go and doesn’t even have time for a shake, he grabs a Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Bar.
