Debbie Phelps Rocked Red for Heart Health

Every season, fashionistas, celebrities, editors, and bloggers alike look forward to the fashion crystal ball that is Fashion Week. Kicking off Spring Fashion Week 2012 last night was The Heart Truth Campaign's Red Dress Collection Fashion Show. The Red Dress Fashion Show, which was created in 2002 to encourage women to take charge of their heart health, always includes a number of celebrities who each don a red dress designed by a different high-fashion designer as a sign of commitment to women's health.

The celebrity roster for this year's Red Dress Show included (among others) Sugarland's lead singer Jennifer Nettles, La La Anthony, and Debbie Phelps, mother of Olympic swim champion Michael Phelps. Subway has partnered with Diet Coke and The Heart Truth to support heart health awareness (after all, February is American Heart Month), so Phelps strutted the runway in Adrianna Papell as Subway's newest Famous Fan

"The heart is a very important organ," says Phelps. "As I've gotten a little bit older and wiser, I've realized just how important it is to take care of yourself, not just physically, but also spiritually and mentally."

Phelps stays fit by running on the treadmill (her daughter is trying to convince her to take up hot yoga, she says) and using free weights, as well as making sure she eats right. 

"I'm a school principal, so I'm on the road a lot, and I'm also by myself a lot, which means I don't always want to cook for myself," she says. "That's why I love Subway—I know I can go in there and get a sandwich quickly that's healthy and delicious." 

"DP" as she is known to her friends and family also says that she makes sure to take one Saturady a month just for herself in order to relax.

"I call it a DP Day," says Phelps. "I turn off my watch and phone, and don't monitor my time. It's my time to just sit and play Words with Friends or curl up with a favorite book and relax."
