Gracie Gold is gunning for a medal to match her auspicious last name in today's ladies figure skating short program (ladies free skate is tomorrow).
The 18-year-old has some stiff competition, including fellow Americans Polina Edmunds and Ashley Wagner, as well as reigning Olympic gold medalist Yuna Kim (this year's favorite) and Russian teen sensation Yulia Lipnitskaya, who wowed the crowds and judges with her jaw-dropping performance in the team skating short event program on February 8. So while some athletes turn to meditation or dancing (you've seen luger Kate Hansen busting a move to Beyonce, right?) before competition, Gold juggles to ease anxiety before she hits the rink.
"It's always been my thing," she says. "It's definitely my quirkiest pre-competition routine!"

Known for her graceful spins and fast moves, Gold's also been working with a sports psychologist to tackle her confidence issues. “I’ve been blessed with pretty good genetics...both my parents were athletes and are pretty well-built, but I think it’s been my grit and my competitive attitude that’s really helped me achieve a lot in life, especially in sports,” she says.
