Katharine McPhee appeared in the premiere of Smash last night, and the entertainment world is abuzz about it. The ads for Smash had been airing for weeks now, and many were excited to see the former American Idol contestant in a leading role. While the show seems great, we were most pumped to see McPhee — who was on the cover of SHAPE in February 2010 — show off her fitness. 

Smash is a musical drama about the making of a musical and from the dancing to the singing, well, being fit is a must. So, today, we thought we'd highlight how McPhee stays so fit and the workouts she loves. Years after recovering from an eating disorder, McPhee now uses exercise to improve her health and her relationship with her body.

Katherine McPhee's Favorite Workouts

1. Outdoor workouts. The gym can be great, but why not get outside? McPhee likes to get outside and enjoy the fresh air along with her exercise.

2. Fun sports. Working out doesn't have to be really hard or boring. McPhee switches things up by finding fun ways to add activity to her life like throwing a football around.

3. Resistance Bands. McPhee's trainer likes to skip the traditional weights sometimes for resistance bands, which are portable and light-weight yet totally effective.
