As I watch the Olympic games, I just can’t help but think, how many calories are the well-oiled machines known as athletes burning when competing in their sport? Not only are they exerting themselves harder than I even I know how, they are carrying around so much more muscle mass, a recipe for calorie-torching success! Thanks to the makers of BodyMedia Armbands, we found out approximately how many calories these athletes are burning each and every minute they compete. And just to put this list in perspective, I’m burning just under 1.5 calories a minute as I watch the games from the comfort of my couch! Some of these numbers may shock you, both on the high and the low end. Check it out and see which athletes need to eat all day to fuel their bodies. No wonder Michael Phelps reportedly eats 6,000 to10,000 calories a day!
Calories burned per minute by Olympic athletes:
Abby Wambach: 13
Alex Morgan: 12
Gabby Douglas: 6
LeBron James: 18
Meb Keflezighi: 22
LaShawn Merritt: 47
Are you surprised by any of these? I am! And considering Merritt crosses the finish line in under 45 seconds I’m thinking that’s the best bang for your caloric buck! Weekend sprints anyone?
