Yesterday on the Today show, Olympic beach volleyball champion Kerri Walsh Jennings revealed a big secret: During the Olympics, she was five weeks pregnant!
"When I was throwing my body around fearlessly, and going for gold for our country, I was pregnant, and today I'm 11 weeks pregnant," Walsh Jennings told Matt Lauer.
The 34-year-old athlete and her husband (also a volleyball player) already have two children. While on a romantic vacation a month before the Olympics, they decided to stop putting off trying for a third child.
"For some reason, I thought it'd take me a while to get pregnant this time," she says. Five weeks later, she was feeling "unreasonably moody." Her long-time friend and teammate, Misty May-Treanor, picked up on her 'tude change and suggested she was probably pregnant—and she was right!
It turns out Walsh Jennings wasn't the only mama-to-be at the 2012 Games: Shooter Nur Suryani Mohammad Taibi of Malaysia was eight months pregnant when she competed in London.
We're sure Walsh Jennings plans to take good care of herself and her soon-to-be little one.
"My job is to be fit, and I’m really blessed that I get to go and work out and live a really healthy lifestyle," she told NBC a month before the Olympics. "And I have to in order to accomplish my goals."
