Lupita Nyong'o is the newest face of Lancôme, and we can't think of anyone better to represent the iconic brand. Not only does the Oscar winner have flawless skin, but in recent interviews, she's proved that her beauty is more than skin-deep. "For me, beauty is a compassion for yourself and those around you," Nyong'o told WWD. "And I think that in focusing on that, the light inside illuminates the beauty outside."
Nyong'o's inner light has been apparent ever since she exploded onto the scene with her poignant performance in 12 Years a Slave. Despite co-starring with an illustrious list of seasoned Hollywood vets, it was the 31-year-old ingenue who captured everyone's attention.
Nyong'o credits acting for helping her as a brand ambassador. "The idea that Lancôme now has a few actor ambassadors is significant because actors are not just faces, they are spirits that people enjoy and relate to more than in an aesthetic way. We have the privilege of standing for something other than just looks."
But while her complex portrayal of the slave Patsey won her awards, she admits her Kenyan-Mexican looks have also garnered her just as much attention. In an industry that still debates whether a black actress can be "too dark," her luminous skin, short hair, and bright smile are inspiration to every woman who doesn't fit the cookie-cutter mold of Hollywood beauty. "I am particularly proud to represent [Lancôme's] unique vision for women and the idea that beauty should not be dictated, but should instead be an expression of a woman's freedom to be herself," Nyong'o said in the press release.
We definitely agree that everyone has their own unique brand of beauty and can't wait to see the sure-to-be stunning campaign. What do you think of this news? Tell us in the comments below or tweet us @Shape_Magazine!
