Just one week before the U.S. Open, Maria Sharapova’s not at the gym practicing her back swing. Her head is mentally ready for her first match, she says, and for now it’s time to have a little fun. Last night, the always-fashionable tennis pro slipped on a David Korma dress and sky-high black Rupert Sanderson pumps to introduce her Sugarpova accessories collection at Henri Bendel.
The accessories, which Sharapova designed nine months ago, match the sporty-sweet trend of her candy line that debuted last year. “When we launched, everyone really loved the logo,” Sharapova says. “I love the way Henri Bendel makes their accessories, so I thought it’d be great to pair these two together.” The line includes adorable bags featuring a hybrid design of Henri Bendel’s signature stripes and the colorful Sugarpova logo plus hats, t-shirts, jewelry, and hair accessories. “I’ll be wearing the bobby pins and the clear earrings on the court next week,” she says.
The Sugarpova line has become such a big part of Sharapova’s life that she considered officially changing her last name to match the candy brand. “I considered it, but there’s a lot of documentation to do and you have to go to court, so it was too much time with my travel schedule,” she says. “Some fans on Twitter already call me Maria Sugarpova, and when I type my last name into my phone, it automatically corrects it anyway!”
After the launch, it’s back to gearing up for next week, she says. “It’s the calm before the storm and it’s really about maintenance, doing a few core exercises in between the tennis workouts,” she says.
