Running 200 stairs with a baby on her back and more unusual workout strategies that got the DWTS host back in shape
TV personality Samantha Harris may have the most intense post-baby fitness regime I’ve ever heard of and I’ve heard so many (Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé, Ali Landry, Mariah Carey). One of her favorite workouts from before her first pregnancy, running the Santa Monica stairs, didn’t stop once she had her first daughter. The ET host simply recruited her husband to help. “One person would run stairs while the other one ran with the stroller back and forth doing intervals,” says Harris. She even scaled the stairs with her baby daughter on her back a few times but the fit host admits, “200 stairs with a baby on your back—not so easy!” It’s these runs, and an easier 40-step stair run that Harris credits as a major part of her amazing post-baby physique. Plus, these outdoor excursions created great bonding time with her daughter!
Of course Harris never gave up her regular workouts during her pregnancy, which also helped. “I kept up my regular fitness regime just at a lower heart rate while I was pregnant.” The former DWTS host did skip one part of her routine though—crunches, which she hates! “Being pregnant was awesome because I wasn’t allowed to do any crunches…At the end of class they would lie on the floor doing abs exercises and I would say ‘see ya’ and go stretch on my own.” So how does Harris keep her abs looking so good without hitting the mat? She “doesn’t mind doing abs exercises while standing but crunches are the bane of [her] exercise existence.” Harris’ favorite move is to stand with heavy weights in both hands leaning side to side to engage the obliques.
When she’s not running Harris enjoys Bikram yoga, kick boxing, a treadmill/strength training bootcamp class, and ballet barre. Harris likes to keep her body guessing, challenging her muscles and mind so she doesn’t tire of her fitness routine. And if it seems like Harris is an exercise know-it-all you’re right! She has a new fitness book coming out soon (follow @SamanthaHarris on Twitter to learn more) and was considering getting certified as a personal trainer when she stopped filming Entertainment Tonight in January.
For now, Harris’ certification is on hold—but for good reason! While she’s not filming, Harris has been keeping busy partnering with Juicy Juice in their Fruit for All Project. This summer, Juicy Juice and Feeding America will be delivering 35 million pieces of fresh fruit to children and families in need all across America. If you want to do your part to help feed the estimated 16 million children in this country who are food insecure, simply head to your local grocery store. For every Juicy Juice product sold one piece of fruit will be donated to a child in need. Click here to learn more. In the mean time call your local food bank and volunteer your time. Harris, who has been working with Feeding America for three years, stops by to lend a hand whenever she has a few hours free. If the super-active TV host and mother of two can find time so can you!
