Tomorrow, Rocco DiSpirito will be challenging America to eat better on his new show Now Eat This with Rocco DiSpirito. He'll be teaching families and individuals how to cut empty calories, sugar, and fat from their daily diets and how to get more nutritional bang for their buck at every meal. Below are his five favorite ways to slash calories so we can all start eating better today. For more calorie-cutting tips, check your local listings for showtimes.

Say goodbye to sour cream
Sour cream is smooth and dense, which makes it great for dips, sauces, and baked goods. Unfortunately, it's also extremely high in calories and fat—bad news for your waistline.
1 cup = 490 calories

Instead, try...
1 cup low-fat cottage cheese mixed with 1 tablespoon lemon juice (saves 325 calories)
or
1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt (saves 390 calories)

Tap into flourless power
Flour is high in calories, low in nutritional value.
1 cup = 440 calories

Instead, try...
1 cup puréed beans (saves 220 calories)
or
1 cup corn flour (saves 166 calories—and it’s gluten-free!)

Don't eyeball the oil
You can’t believe everything you see on TV. That generous chefy drizzle is a calorie disaster!
1 tablespoon = 120

Instead, try...
Always measuring oil to save hundreds of calories per pour
or
Greasing your skillet with vegetable oil cooking spray (saves 120 calories)
or
Fat-free olive oil: green olive brine thickened with arrowroot or guar gum (saves 95 calories per tablespoon)

Wine and dine yourself thin
We all love a glass of wine—or three—with dinner, right? But you don't want to go overboard.
1 glass (5 ounces) = 120 calories

Instead, try...
Mixing vino with sparkling water to make a spritzer (saves 80 calories)
or
Champagne (saves 35 calories)

Use those teeth
That a.m. glass of orange juice is highly caloric and sky-high on the glycemic index.
1 cup = 120 calories

Instead try...
Eating an orange (saves 50 calories)

As an editor at SHAPE I have the chance to learn about the healthiest ways to cook, eat, and live from all sorts of experts but I’m also a single girl living in NYC with a busy schedule, active social life, and chocolate cravings. I’m here to share what works for me—and where I need a little help from you.
