I don't know how, but when we put together our piece on the sexiest Olympic athletes (check it out here), we somehow missed 23-year-old American swimmer Nathan Adrian altogether. We apologize for this egregious error, but he's definitely on our radar now! Not only is he absolutely adorable, but he graduated from University of California, Berkeley (Hey, I was born in Berkeley! Nathan, call me!) with honors and a degree in public health, and he just beat Australia's James "The Missile" Magnussen in the men's 100-meter individual freestyle on August 1.
This is big for a couple of reasons. First, the 21-year-old Magnussen is (or was) the best man in the world at this event. Second, most of the talk about American swimming at the Olympics so far has centered on Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte, with Adrian being largely absent from the competition. Although he won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he swam the first leg of the 400x100-meter freestyle relay, he has never won an individual gold medal until he touched the wall one-hundredth of a second faster than Magnussen on Wednesday. With a final time of 47.52, he managed to win the gold and set a new personal record for himself. According to an interview he gave in USA Today, before this week, he had never swam the relay in under 48 seconds. This week he's done it three times.
But if you thought he couldn't get any cuter, you'd be wrong. Adrian told NBC's Andrea Kremer that when he learned he won the gold medal, he almost cried in the pool. Say it with me: Awwwwww!
The 100-meter freestyle was Adrian's last individual event at this year's games, so we're happy for him that it ended on a high note. In case you haven't gotten enough of the underdog swimmer, we mocked up some crush-worthy photo memes for your enjoyment (seriously check out his smile!). Share your favorite one!
