Opening Ceremony Recap: Let the Games Begin!

Wow! What a great celebration of the greatest athletes in the world. London totally rocked the Opening Ceremony. There were so many highlights of the evening for me that it’s hard to know where to begin.

Let’s start with one of the more surprising highlights of the evening—that'd be Queen Elizabeth II making a royal entrance via a chopper to the James Bond theme song. Who would have ever thought the Queen of England could be so cool? Another highlight for me was seeing the great Muhammed Ali with the Olympic flag as it passed by him. Of course having Sir Paul McCartney perform was definitely a nice touch. How awesome was the lighting of the cauldron? It was really difficult to pick my favorite highlight, but I’m going to bet this one was probably most women’s favorite: David Beckham arriving on a speed boat to deliver the torch. How hot was that? So glad I have a DVR!

As I was watching and listening to the commentators, all I could think about was how much history there is with every nation that was represented in the Games. It is truly amazing how sports can unite a world amidst all of the wars, controversies, disagreements, and many other issues we are facing today.

Now that the Opening Ceremony is over it’s time to get down to business. I know what athletes and events I’m looking forward to. What about you? What did you think of the ceremony? Tell us in the comments below!

Until next time,
Sheryl Swoopes
