The Important Fitness Lesson I Learned from Disney

You have a lot more in common with Disney's Tarzan and Jane than you might think. After all, who doesn't love the idea of being rescued by a super-hot, shirtless guy? But let's shift our focus to Jane, a confident woman who can pull off a bikini made of leaves. One thing's for sure: She didn't end up with a killer body by batting her eyelashes at boys.

When I was growing up, the boys were always picked first in gym class. And while I might have outrun them in elementary school, by junior high their height and muscles beat out my curves on the field. Still, that doesn't mean they are outright the fitter or stronger sex. In fact, I've seen a lot more hottie Pilates bodies on 35-year-old women than six-packs on mid-30s men.

When it comes to health and fitness, I can't stress enough how much every little bit of effort helps. While family duties might keep us from the luxury of long workouts at the gym, it doesn't mean we can't find alternative, convenient ways to fit in exercise. Get creative and take on some heavy lifting at home! When your trunk is filled with a super-sized Costco run, time yourself and sprint your load from the car to the cabinets. Save the money you might pay a landscaper and do your own digging, mulching, and planting. Drag your fall clothes out of the attic and pull together a bag to drop at your local Salvation Army or Goodwill store.

Every once in a while, we all like to play damsels in distress. But make no mistake, chores do not need to be gender specific, and if you want to incorporate toning into your time, take on the projects that work up a sweat!

Pictured here is my husband and me at the beach. He might have beat me in today's pushup showdown, but the battles not over. And 20 pushups beats sitting around and snacking, so this is one loss I'm happy to accept.
