On April 19th, in celebration of Earth Month 2010 and Origins Earth Initiatives, I attended the all–natural beauty company’s first “Origins Rocks Earth Month Concert” in New York City. (For those of you who didn’t know, Origins is uber-green. The company lets you drop off empty cosmetic packaging including bottles, tubes, jars, caps and compacts—regardless of the brand—to any of its retail stores or department-store counters.) There, I caught up with actress and event emcee Juliette Lewis, and the Oscar-nominated singer Jon McLaughlin to get their thoughts on all things beauty.
Shape/CC: “So I have to tell you, I think you are one of the funniest actresses out there—and I loved you in Whip It. Do you credit your super toned legs to roller derby?
Juliette Lewis/JL: (laughs) “No, actually I’m always on the road with my band and the show is pretty intense, so I feel like I’m constantly working out. Plus, I do Barry’s Boot Camp in LA—it’s my new religion.”
CC: “Ok, so since I’m the beauty editor at Shape, I have to know what you A. won’t leave the house without putting on, and B. what color is on your fingertips and toes?”
JL: “I absolutely can’t leave the house without putting on Origins A Perfect World Highly Hydrating body lotion—my skin just feels too dry if I don’t, and Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Exfoliating Lip Salvation balm. The color that’s on my nails was inspired by my 14 year old niece, Bella. I usually wear red nail polish, but I went with her to get a mani/pedi and she picked out this pale lavender shade from OPI [called Rumple's Wiggin]. Since I had this event I wasn’t sure if I should wear purple, but then she says to me, ‘just get it!’ So I did.
**Cut to me totally taking a cue from JL and copying her style the next day using Revlon's Nail Enamel in Lilac Pastelle. See below:
Shape/CC: “It’s very nice to meet you, Jon, I’ve been a fan of yours ever since I watched the movie Enchanted, in which you performed your Oscar-nominated song So Close.
Jon McLaughlin/JM: “Well, thank you, it was a honor to be a part of that whole project.”
CC: “Ok, so are you ready to get down to business? We’re talking beauty here.”
CC: “What does beauty mean to you?”
JM: “Well, when I think of beauty I think of my wife, Amy. Obviously you can’t underplay physical attraction, but I feel like you have to be comfortable in your own skin.”
CC: “Speaking of outer beauty, what feature are you most drawn to on a woman?”
JM: “I’d have to say I always notice teeth first (I didn’t have the best set of them growing up), then probably eyes next.”
CC: “Perfume. Lover or hater?” JM: “Hmm. Lover. There’s one that I notice my wife wearing that’s called [Vera Wang] Princess.”
CC: “Since you are married, I’m sure you have double the amount of products in your bathroom, but is there one that you can’t help but use of hers?”
JM: “There are some that are definitely off limits, like the ones that have a fragrance or are expensive, but one thing I do constantly use is her body lotion, the cheap one, of course.” (laughs)
CC: “Ok, last question: Red lipstick on a first date or au natural?”
JM: “Definitely more of a natural look. Color is nice, but can be overpowering.”
