Did you wake up feeling pretty good about the state of humanity this morning? Yes? Sorry, I am here to ruin those feelings of goodwill with the discovery that a Facebook page called "530 Fatties," which basically mocks people about their weight, actually exists and is causing a stir in the 530 area of California.
Although a phone number on the page has been disconnected and it appears that the page may have been taken down sometime on Monday afternoon, the administrators behind it were apparently snapping photos of overweight and obese people without their permission and mocking them, KPLCTV is reporting. "It's probably someone from around here," Jessi Lynn Howell, a California resident who found herself a target of the page, told the network. "They post shots of people without their permission, and it's hurtful," she said.
Howell said she saw a photo of herself that had been taken last October on the page. She has since lost 50 pounds, and says she's using this shocking experience to help motivate her. "I'm not where I want to be, but I'll get there," she said. "Cyber bullying—bullying period—needs to stop. So I'm going to be a voice today for those people that don't have that voice."
If Howell's quotes were Facebook comments, we'd "like" a thousand times over. We can't believe that this doesn't go without saying, but here's to hoping this can serve as your friendly neighborhood reminder that a) mocking people about their weight is never okay, and b) neither is cyber-bullying (or any type of bullying, for that matter).
