Does It Make Sense to Use Scents?
You know that your sense of smell is powerful, but how powerful? With this in mind, I was very intrigued when I was invited to have dinner last night with Giuliana Rancic, who's partnered with Glade to unveil a new premium fragrance experience, the new Glade Expressions Collection. As part of the dinner, I was able to take a tour of the residence and see a presentation from Glade on how fragrances can boost your health.
In each room, I was handed a different cocktail and appetizer to complement a specific Glade Expressions scent. For example, in one of the living rooms, we were given a "falling apple," a cocktail with hints of Fuji apple and cardamom spice to accompany spiced Moroccan lamb meatballs, while the room was scented with the Glade Expressions Fuji Apple & Cardamom Spice diffuser. The result? I felt warm and cozy and ready to curl up by a fire with a good book. In another room, we enjoyed grilled pineapple with coconut-poached chicken and a pineapple martini while the room was spritzed with the Pineapple and Mangosteen fragrance. By the time we were finished in that room, I think everyone (or me, at least!) was ready to grab another cocktail and hit the beach.
It turns out that your sense of smell is the most powerful of all your five senses. In fact, the deep limbic center—the part of your brain that controls your emotions— is connected to your olfactory system, which means that different scents can affect your mood or evoke certain memories and emotions. Need a quick pick-me-up? Sniff something peppermint or chew on a peppermint candy—it's been shown to stimulate the part of the brain that controls wakefulness. On the other hand, the compounds in lavender have a mildly sedating affect on your limbic center, which means that it's a good scent to have around when you're super stressed. Other scents, such as pumpkin are believed to boost your libido—and who wouldn't want to take advantage of that?
