Confession time: After a long, drawn-out, and painful breakup, I have found myself recently single again. Everyone I know has been pressuring me to get back on the horse, so to speak, and jump back into the dating game. So when I found myself invited to a Match.com Stir event hosted by As One Effect Gym billed as a way for singles to "work out with their matches in a fun, interactive way," I thought, How fortuitous! I can put in a workout and try my newly uncovered, sure-to-be-rusty flirting skills out on the unsuspecting guys who show up. Perfect.
So a coworker and I headed uptown to As One Effect on Sunday, April 28, to try our hand at speed workout dating. Upon arriving at the gym, we saw different stations set up around the space (each station included equipiment such as bikes, stairmasters, and Jacob's Ladders). We formed a circle and introduced ourselves to the intructors, Mark and George, and the other gym-goers. First thoughts? If you are a super fitness-oriented chick, this could definitely be a good way to meet a number of attractive, like-minded fit men. However, the women did outnumber the men, which meant that some of the ladies never had a chance to work out with any of the guys.

Mark paired us all up and assigned each couple to a workout station (there were five stations total, which meant that there were two couples working out at each station simultaneously). Each couple spent 15 minutes at each station, and when the buzzer rang, we'd rotate.
The workout was definitely intense and almost two hours long. On the one hand, that's great. I hadn't worked out at all that weekend, so getting in a two-hour circuit-style routine was definitely better than nothing. On the other hand, I was so busy focusing on myself and making sure I was squatting, jumping, crunching, or generally moving correctly that I wasn't concentrating on getting to know the guy next to me. Plus I was sweating a lot. I wasn't the only one, but I wasn't exactly feeling sexy as I dragged myself up and down the Jacob's Ladder next to Brian (who was really cute, by the way).
When the buzzer rang for the last time, we all collapsed on the ground for a quick cool down. Luckily there was a cooler full of beer waiting for us when we were finished. The last half-hour of the event was dedicated to mingling and getting to know one another, though my coworker and I actually had to duck out about 20 minutes early. Still, people appeared to be having a good time as they talked and sipped their beers, and I suspect that this is where a lot of the "matching up" of men and women happened.

Overall my experience was a pretty positive one: The concept of speed workout dating is a great one, though I think the event could have been slightly better executed. If health and fitness is very important to you and you're hoping to find a partner who feels the same way, I'd recommend you give it a shot.
