We're officially a month out from the Olympics! We're so excited about the games and our upcoming coverage, and what better way to kick off the Olympic countdown than in beautiful, breezy California to see the Team USA gymnastics trials? I had the opportunity to travel to San Jose this week with Procter & Gamble as a member of the press on their Thank You, Mom campaign. Besides having the opportunity to see the women's gymnastics team rehearsing (seriously, we were so close to the stage that when they clapped their hands to shake off excess chalk, it rained down on me and my media colleagues), as well as the men's Day 1 Trials, I was able to attend a press conference with 2008 Olympic athlete Shawn Johnson (read the interview here!), who spoke on behalf of Procter & Gamble about the US Olympic Committee and P&G's Team USA Sports Youth Fund, which provides a $75,000 grant to benefit the USA Gymnastics Program (P&G will also contribute $1 to the sports fund for every follower @thankyoumom receives on Twitter).
"When I was young, I was really given the opportunity to find a passion and an outlet in a sport that I loved," Johnson says. "A lot of kids aren't given that opportunity. This program has the potential to reach a million kids and really give them the knowledge and ability to find an outlet of their own. Sports are so important in setting kids up for life, so this program really touches on that," she told SHAPE.com.
Well, there you have it! The opening ceremony takes place on July 27th. We can't wait to see our favorite fit athletes hit the pool, track, beams, and more. Keep checking back, as we'll be updating our coverage daily.
Can't wait until then for more Olympic updates? Read on for a more in-depth exclusive Q and A with Shawn Johnson.
