Olive Garden to Tweak Menu for the Healthier

Calling all pasta-lovers! Olive Garden is getting a nutritional makeover. 

That's right, Darden Restaurants, who is the parent company behind popular restaurant chains Olive Garden, Red Lobster, LongHorn Steakhouse and Bahama Breeze, announced it has plans to reduce the calorie count and salt content of its food and provide more nutritious options on its children’s menus.

Darden Restaurants teamed up with Partnership for a Healthier America, the nonprofit organization that works with the First Lady on her “Let’s Move!” initiative. First Lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to appear and express her support for the menu revamp, according to CNN. In the past, Michelle Obama has expressed concerns to the National Restaurant Association about the high calorie content of its menu offerings.

While the nutritional changes won't happen overnight, they are substantial. Olive Garden and other Darden Restaurants have vowed to cut sodium in its dishes by ten percent over the next five years and 20 percent over the next ten years. Olive Garden will also create more healthy choices for its smallest customers, making fruits or vegetables the default side dish option and an 8-ounce serving of 1 percent milk the default beverage.
