If you're like most Americans, you're wandering through life sleep-deprived and caffeine-overloaded. Smart readers that you are, you probably already know deep down that a lack of sleep can lead to a host of problems, including an increased risk of obesity, stroke, and diabetes.

Now a startling and slightly sobering new infographic shows just how much you're losing out on when you don't get enough shut-eye. Just one week of sleeping fewer than six hours a night causes serious health issues, including the alteration of more than 700 genes.

The infographic below from Alissa Scheller illustrates in more detail what happens when you don't get enough rest. From losing brain tissue to being more likely to catch a cold, one thing is for sure: Your brain and body are majorly losing out on necessary benefits. Check out the graphic and then tell us: How do you feel when you don't get enough sleep? Sound off in the comments or tweet us @Shape_Magazine
