What's Trending with Tara: Plaid Patterns

Dinah Peña

Is it just me or has everyone been mad for plaid lately? From miniskirts to pants, oversized scarves to statement coats, the timeless print is on fire this season and there are no signs of it slowing down. Whether you’re drawn to '90s grunge, traditional Scottish tartans, or unapologetically bright colors, designers have blurred the lines of past plaid fads so that when it comes to checks, almost anything goes. In fact, no matter what your style, plaid can be the perfect print to help you pull your entire outfit together. Keep reading and I'll show you how to find the plaid that speaks to you.

Last fall, I couldn’t get enough of the relaxed street style: an oversized flannel tied around my waist or effortlessly draped open with a graphic t-shirt underneath. A year later and I’m still seeing women rocking the print this way, often paired with a pair of skinny jeans or leather leggings. While I still love this look—and it remains a staple in my wardrobe—lately I’ve been leaning toward more ladylike versions of the trend, pulling elegant plaid pieces together in a more refined way. For example, the other day I wore a button-down plaid shirt with a navy blazer, pleated skirt, and an envelope clutch. The pattern had just the right color scheme to tie the other pieces together without looking too loud.

If your self-described style falls somewhere between sophisticated and casual, try working plaid into your outfit with a polished flair. Consider tucking a flannel top into a skirt made of a luxurious fabric, such as satin or leather, or perhaps even into a pair of high-waisted trousers for a tailored, more feminine look. You can also top off an otherwise simple outfit with a plaid blazer, scarf, or small accessory to give it an edgy update. When winter approaches, plaid coats make a bold fashion statement that is sure to turn heads. The only advice I’d give with this one is to keep the rest of your look sleek and subdued. And when it comes to this pattern, don’t be afraid to mix prints so long as the colors are in harmony and the size of the checks are different enough to make the pairing appear deliberate. So pick up a piece that works with your style sensibility or find an oldie but goodie from your closet. Now is just the right time to start playing with plaid.
