What's Trending with Tara: Thigh High Boots

Fall has arrived, so it’s finally time to break out your fabulous boots! Although you may already have a slew in your wardrobe to choose from, not to mention stores are carrying every kind these days, let me make my case for the style this season: over-the-knee.

By now you’re probably envisioning Julia Roberts strutting her stuff down Hollywood Boulevard in Pretty Woman, and who doesn’t love that movie? But thigh-high boots don’t have to scream streetwalker. On the contrary, a contemporary pair can be chic, sophisticated, and practical. They’re truly a closet gem as they can polish off a broad range of looks from mini to midi skirts, cuffed shorts, or skinny jeansPair them with a short skirt or a dress to reveal a sexy sliver of skin and achieve a softer look than you would get when wearing stockings. If you decide to bare some leg, try to limit it to about three inches of thigh between your boot and bottoms.

As the temps begin to drop (for some of you they may already have), your thigh-highs will provide an extra layer to keep your legs warm. They also jazz up an otherwise ordinary outfit, like your go-to jeans and a simple blouse. Just add a statement necklace or clutch and you’ve got a great outfit that you can wear from day to night.

You can also use thigh high boots as a tool for balancing out your proportions. If your boot is tight and fitted like mine (pictured above), add a touch of volume to your top half with looser sweaters, billowy dresses, a pleated skirt, or an oversized coat. If you’re afraid this look will still be too harsh, consider a boot in a softer texture, such as suede. And as practical as black is, choosing a gentler color, such as gray or tan, can really temper the overtly sexy nature of the style.

To further ensure elegance, steer clear of too-shiny, faux leather resembling plastic, sky-high platforms, and, of course, anything uncomfortable. (This style is meant to compliment your look, not cut off circulation to your legs!) Check out some of these @TaraBryanStyle-approved instagrams to find your best over-the-knee inspiration.
