If you suffer from chronic back pain, it's time to hit the yoga mat! According to one of the largest studies on yoga, regular down dogs and other yoga poses can ease back pain and other symptoms better even than a self-care book.

Published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers had participants do weekly 75-minute Viniyoga classes, which adapts the principles of yoga for each individual, for 12 weeks. Most participants had moderate to severe back pain and by the end of the yoga reported using fewer painkillers and having fewer symptoms for at least six months after the yoga.

While the yoga classes also included breathing exercises and deep relaxation at the end, researchers believe most of the back-pain relief came from the physical benefits of yoga, including stretching and strengthening the muscles.
