Staying healthy is vital to my overall happiness and productivity. I can't afford to get sick — even a slight cold will set me back so I want to provide some tips on what I've been doing this winter to stay on top of my game and to avoid the sniffles that everyone seems to sharing.


Here are six simple things I do every single day that I believe have kept me healthy this season. Keep in mind that I travel for work so I'm frequently on airplanes, I live in New York City so I'm constantly on public transportation, and I work in an office with about seventy other people so germs are always present, innocently waiting for the next person to attack.


1. Take Your Vitamins (C and Zinc)

First and foremost — take your vitamins. Use a dry eraser marker and write it on your bathroom mirror to remind yourself not to forget. During the winter months I take 1,000mg of Vitamin C and 23mg of Zinc every single day. (Read about Zinc before taking it and make sure you aren't taking too much — less than 40mg daily — or it can have negative effects on the body). I'll even put them into individual snack size plastic baggies in case I'm rushing around in the morning and need to bring them with me or for when I travel. 2. Get Your Sleep (8 Hours)

This is one area of my life where I won't negotiate. Of course there will be those times when bed time gets shifted around from the norm however, even if it means cutting out of an evening social event early, I get my rest. Not only does it make me more productive during the day to be well rested, it helps my body fight off germs when I'm exposed to them in the various environments in which I'm in every day. 



3. Wash Your Hands (Constantly)

I can't emphasis this enough. Everyone has heard that hand washing is important but I do it religiously. If I don't have access to soap and a sink, I carry hand sanitizer to use. I also always have hand lotion with me because lots of hand washing can lead to drying, so I use lotion after I wash to make sure my skin isn't suffering from all of the exposure to warm water.



4. Take a Probiotic  (Every Day)

You've seen in past articles that I've been suffering from digestion issues my whole life and taking a probiotic has definitely been helpful in that area, but I've also found that regulating bacteria in the body and promotion of healthy bacteria has seemed to play a role in eliminating sickness and the every day cold. Check out this article if you don't believe me.




5. Use a Humidifier (Every Night)

Living in a New York City apartment with radiator heat that can't be controlled can make sleeping difficult. The air is stifling dry and very hot at times. Sleeping with a humidifier not only keeps the appearance of my bedroom calmer (there's something about the moisture blowing into the air), it also keeps me breathing smoothly during my sleep and helps eliminate germs. Note: do your research before you buy a humidifier, if it doesn't provide a proper filtration system it could be doing more harm than good. 



6. Have Sex (As Often as You Like)

It's been proven that having more sex can help boost the immunity system. Don't just take my word for it, try it. And read this or one of the countless articles written about this subject matter if you next more proof.
