Sweat for a Cause

It seems like there’s a different fundraiser going on every single day
in college. It’s so fantastic to give back, even in small ways, when we’ve all been given so much. There’s no shortage of choices for where to donate your time and money, so why not choose a cause where you can contribute some of your skills, or even get a good workout?

One of the frats holds “Bench Press for Breast Cancer” (clever, right?) and last fall, I ran a 5K to benefit my town’s free medical clinic. But my yoga-instructor friend put on my favorite fundraiser so far: Yoga for Smiles, to benefit Operation Smile! We all practiced yoga for an hour and a half to a smile-inducing playlist, and donated a few dollars at the end. Getting a child cleft surgery only costs a couple hundred dollars, so if we all donate $3-5 each for each class, we’ll be able to change a child’s life forever.  

Do you volunteer? If you’re looking for a way to get involved, you can
use skills you already have to raise money for, or directly benefit,
those in need. Run a race, cook a meal for an elderly person, tutor at
an understaffed elementary school, clean the storeroom of a food
pantry, etc. What better way to brighten up the late-winter doldrums!
