Clean up your sweet treats!

First of all I am sooooo sorry for the delay in posting this last tip and the 7th day recipe. There was a computer glitch beyond my control that wouldn’t allow the content to be seen. In any case thank you for your patience and for coming back! I’m anxious to hear your feedback about and of the recipes, tips, products or overall clean eating approach.

Clean up your sweet treats. Let’s face it – nobody can go through life never eating a cookie, but most packaged brands are packed with ingredients like partially hydrogenated oil (aka trans fat), high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors, flavors and plenty of preservatives. Same with America’s favorite treat: ice cream. Here’s my rule of thumb: if a treat is formulated based on its shelf life it doesn’t go in my body. Here’s how to get your fix while honoring the clean eating rules:

 

Buy one freshly baked cookie from a real bakery (one that makes cookies the old fashioned way) and savor every bite. This strategy also eliminates the temptation to gobble down the whole bag.

 

Head to a gourmet ice cream or gelato establishment. Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream is simply made from cream, skim milk, sugar, egg yolks, and natural vanilla. Yes it’s decadent but it’s the real deal (e.g. check the ingredients on a carton of reduced fat ice cream at your supermarket and you’ll find words like propylene glycol monostearate and microcrystalline cellulose!) and if you stick to a half cup portion of “real” ice cream, which is plenty enough to satisfy, you’ll only spend about 250 calories. Bonus: no pint in the freezer calling your name.

 

Don’t do dairy? Look for all natural “ice cream” made with organic soy or coconut milk (yum)!
