Fall Fat Trap #2 - Hween Candy!

Yesterday I posted about a common calorie trap you may get caught in as we transition from summer to fall.

 

Another frequent autumn misstep I see among my clients is celebrating Halloween early. Here in NYC I first saw Halloween candy in a drug store in early August (!), and now it’s in full swing. Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday (do you dress up? If so what will you be this year?) and I love extending the celebration as long as possible. Trouble is just two little fun sized treats can pack between 150 and 200 calories. That means if you mindlessly munched on 10 a week between now and Halloween (which is pretty easy to do) you could take in an extra 9,000 calories!

 

Here are the calorie contents of some of the most popular candies:

 

Candy Corn – 140 calories for 26 pieces

Tootsie Rolls – 140 for 6 pieces

York Peppermint Patty – 140 for 3

Milky Way – 150 for 2

Snickers – 160 calories for 2

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups Reese’s – 170 for 2

Butterfinger – 170 for 2

Pay Day – 190 for 2

Candy Apple – 215 calories per small

Kit Kat – 220 for 3

Twix – 240 for 3

Caramel Apple – 285 calories per small

 

If All Hallows Eve tends to trigger a downward spiral of overeating between now and New Year’s Day, here are a few tricks to manage your treats:

Make the candy harder to get to. Place the candy in a sealable container or another bag and stash it on a high shelf where you won’t see it. Studies show the more steps you have to go through to get candy, the less you’ll eat - whereas if it’s right on the counter you’ll grab it without even thinking about it.

Don’t open the Halloween candy until Halloween night. Between now and then treat yourself to a healthier, low cal daily treat, like an individually wrapped dark chocolate square or truffle. Research shows that dark chocolate is more satiating than milk chocolate. Some of my favorite guilt-free options include:
