Get Skinny While You Shop – Part 2

Shopping can be risky business in more ways than one. In addition to charging up too much credit card debt you may in danger of spending far too many calories. In yesterday’s post I mentioned that you could easily rack up a 700 calories quenching your thirst. Here’s how to avoid it:

Skip the soft drinks. If you regularly read this blog you know I’m no fan of soda, but when you really put it in perspective it’s pretty shocking. A large fast food regular drink has over 300 calories, 21 tsp of sugar and zero nutrients. A 150 pound adult would have to walk the mall for an hour and 20 minutes just to burn that off. Reach for water, seltzer or unsweetened iced tea instead.

If you stop for coffee, modify your order. My hubby doesn’t have a big sweet tooth, but when we’re at Macy’s during the holiday season he always gets a craving for a Peppermint Mocha from Starbucks. A grande ordered “as is” packs 400 calories and 40% of the recommended max intake for saturated fat. Keep the whipped cream but switch to a tall nonfat or soy version and you’ll save 100 calories. Ask your barista to skip one pump each of the peppermint syrup and mocha sauce and you’ll save another 80.

Come back tomorrow to find out exactly how holiday shopping can help you shrink your fat cells!
