If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know that I’m a big fan of whole grains. Not only are they higher in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, but eating more of them, and fewer refined grains, may allow you to whittle your middle without eating less food.
A recent Tufts University study found that adults who reported eating three or more daily servings of whole grains and less than one serving per day of refined grains had 10 % less belly fat. Ten percent might not sound like much but think of it this way – if you were carrying five pounds of excess belly fat and lost 10% it would be like melting two sticks of butter from your belly!
I recommend choosing 100% whole grains as often as possible and making refined grains every once in a while can’t-live-without splurges, whether it be white pizza crust or one of mom’s homemade chocolate chip cookies.
These days many more restaurants offer whole grain options, including whole wheat pasta, brown rice and 100% whole grain bread. This photo is from one of my favorite chain restaurants PF Chang’s.
Come back tomorrow – I’ll share my top 10 whole grain staples and what I do to make them tasty!
