Because Halloween falls on Sunday you may be inclined to “celebrate” with treats tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday night, which can lead to a serious case of eater’s remorse Monday morning. Here are a few tips that have helped me and my clients prevent Halloween candy overkill:
If you haven’t bought treats to give out yet choose candy you don't like - for example if you love chocolate give out Smarties or a type of treat that's less tempting. A lot of people get into trouble by handing out their own personal favorites, which can prove to be too irresistible! But if you truly must pass out your favorites buy some of those little paper trick-or-treat bags. Instead of handing out candy straight from a dish toss a few candies into each bag and tape or staple the tops.
Before you unwrap what may look like an insignificant fun-sized bar put its calorie count in perspective. A 150 pound person burns about 60 calories during a 15 minute 3.5 mph walk. That means canceling out two treats may require a 30 minute stroll. Simply knowing exactly what it takes to earn your splurge can impact what or how much you choose (there are calculators right here on Shape.com - click on Weight Loss, then Tools & Calculators). Bottom line: before you bite ask yourself what's really worth it.
If you have leftovers after the last trick-or-treater has rung your doorbell plan to give it away (bring it to work the next day, give it to a neighbor, etc). Or if it’s can’t-live-without candy store it in sealable container in a kitchen cupboard, pick out just one each day, and savor it. Keeping the whole stash in a bowl out in the open can lead to mindless munching. By “budgeting” for one treat each day you’ll maintain more balance without feeling deprived.
