Pain Management: Dealing With Problems the Healthy Way

 

“Whatever I neglect now, I shall have to pay for later.” This quote by Nelly Ptaschkina spoke to me about so many different aspects of my life, I just had to share it with you. In my column this month, I talk about how I got blisters because I wasn’t paying attention to my insoles rubbing my feet while I was running. I can now look back at so many situations and see that pretending the problem didn’t exist was my go-to reaction to bad things—and that it has never really worked.

For instance, both of my grandmothers died around the same time. Instead of talking to someone about how sad I was I tried to ignore it. As a result, I just got more miserable. But now I deal with the issue head on. First, I take a time out and go for a walk to clear my head. Then, I put it in perspective by asking myself how important what happened was. If it’s worth getting worked up over, I force myself to sleep on it. And if I wake up feeling the same way, I talk about it, either with the person responsible or my husband or good friend.
