My niece’s bridal shower was this weekend and I’ve really been looking forward to it. I knew there was going to be lots of good food, so I ate sensibly all week and had a healthy lunch beforehand. Once I got there, I spent a lot of time catching up with old friends instead of standing at the buffet and grazing. They knew about my SHAPE column so we had really great conversations about healthy eating strategies. But the whole time I was there, I kept staring at the tray of cupcakes. (My niece was trying to decide which flavor to serve at her wedding, so there were tons to choose from.) I finally walked over to them, and decided they didn’t look worth it. If I treat myself to something that’s high in fat and calories, I want it to taste amazing. So instead I grabbed a handful of grapes and made my way back to my friends—full of pride, not sugar.
