A perfect pantry

My March column for the magazine was all about how I don’t have to sacrifice nutrition just because I’m on a budget. And one of the biggest tools in my arsenal is my pantry. I keep it full of dry ingredients that can turn a few fresh ones into a healthy meal. Here’s what I try to never run out of:

Brown rice, quinoa, and pearl barley

Whole wheat pasta

Oatmeal, farina, and whole grain cereal (great for breakfast or a post-workout snack)

Cans of tomato sauce (I add cooked veggies to them to bulk up the nutritional value even more)

Peanut butter (greatest protein ever!)

A variety of nuts and popcorn

These meals can all be made in under 20 minutes from pantry staples, perfect when I’m short on ingredients—and time.
