My vacation to Italy is quickly approaching, so I talked to my trainer, Tommy Houck, about some strength-training exercises I can do while away from the gym. He suggested some moves that use my body weight—crunches, push-ups, and lunges—and then told me to pack an exercise band. It hardly takes up any room in my suitcase and will enable me to do resistance work that targets my arms, shoulders, and back. Here is one I love:
- Anchor a band at shoulder height in a doorjamb.
- Stand facing band, feet shoulder-width apart, and hold an end in each hand at shoulder height in front of you, palms facing floor and elbows slightly bend. (Choke up on band, if necessary, until it’s taut).
- Pull arms out to sides.
- Return to center and repeat. Do 10 reps.
