And how to know when to skip it
Many of us assume that we’re making the “smarter” or “healthier” choice when we order a salad. But that’s not always the case, according to my nutritionist, Keri Gans.
For example, the grilled chicken Caesar salad at Panera has 530 calories and 180 of those calories come from the dressing alone. In comparison, a McDonald’s hamburger has 250 calories and an order of small French fries has 230. That means you could have eaten the burger and fries instead of the salad and actually save 50 calories!
If you do love the salads at restaurants like Panera, make sure you only get, or eat, half an order. After all, portion size is always important, no matter what you’re eating! If you can help it, try to avoid calorie-rich creamy dressings and always ask for dressing on the side. A good tip from Keri involves dipping your fork into your dressing and then onto your salad with each bite. This will prevent the restaurant from drowning your greens in oily fattening dressings. Talk about a smarter salad!
