Why You Shouldn’t “Shop the Perimeter”

Over the years, several health and nutrition experts have advised that I “shop the perimeter” of the grocery store. The reasoning? That’s where healthy foods such as fresh fruits and veggies, dairy, meat, and seafood are stocked.  Interestingly enough, when I asked my nutritionist, Keri Gans, to weigh in, she said she’s not a fan of this method. She says that many nutritious items such as beans, olive oil, tuna, oatmeal, whole grains, and peanut butter can be found in the middle grocery aisles.

Instead of avoiding parts of the store, Keri told me that it’s important to be strategic about my shopping habits. This means I should always make a list before I head to the grocery store. The list should contain all of the ingredients necessary to make meals for the week ahead. Keri also says to eat something before going to the supermarket. This way, I won’t be tempted to make impulse buys.
