Last week I met with SHAPE’s fitness editor-at-large, Jay Cardiello, for an afternoon training session, and having edited his fitness blogs week after week, I knew I was in for a tough workout. Sure enough, he decided the basic lunge just wasn’t challenging enough and showed me the two variations below. Don’t be fooled, these modified lunges don’t look that hard but they are—especially the lunge kick, which requires an unexpected amount of strength and balance.
