A protein shake may be a nutritious way to end a long run, but a hearty eggs Benedict and a bloody mary sound like a lot more fun, right? That’s the logic behind bRUNch Running, a social group based in Denver that combines a love of running with a love of food.
Founded last April by friends Alexandra Weissner and Cortney Logan, the group’s mission is to promote a healthy active lifestyle, one in which both fitness and food play a role. (Their motto? Run. Eat. Drink.) As neighbors and avid runners, Weissner and Logan would meet on weekends for a five- or six-mile run, which would end at popular Denver restaurants with good food and cocktails.
“We decided to combine the concepts of eating brunch and running, and bRUNch was founded,” says Weissner. With a background in event planning and the spirits industry, Weissner reached out to contacts at area restaurants to offer great specials for the group. The first official bRUNch event had 30 people, and it took off from there.
Word spread, and in January, bRUNch launched a chapter in Phoenix, followed by chapters in Boulder and Fort Collins, CO. Runners meet on Sundays for either a three- or six-mile run, which concludes at a different restaurant each week. (Non-runners are also welcome to join for brunch.) The group hopes to expand to 15 new cities in the next year, and in September, bRUNch will host a timed 5K race series in Denver, complete with costumes, prizes, and a post-race brunch festival.
The best part: You don’t need to buy a membership to join in the fun. bRUNch runs cost only $25 when purchased in advance, which includes the run, an entrée, two drinks, plus tax and gratuity. And a percentage of the group’s profits support local hunger-relief or animal charities in the local communities. Running, brunching, and doing good? Now that’s our idea of a Sunday Funday!
