Yesterday, 47,438 people raced in the ING NYC Marathon. Former Olympic softball pitcher Jennie Finch finished ahead of 30,397 of them, which is pretty awesome considering she started dead last. No, Jennie wasn’t late getting to the starting line. The mother of two and first-time marathoner began in the back of the pack on purpose: For each competitor she passed along the course, Timex donated $1 to New York Road Runners’ Youth Programs. Jennie’s official time of 4:05:26 for the 26.2-miler put her in 17,041st place, meaning more than $30,000 will go towards helping kids fall in love with fitness so they can lead a healthy life. Inspired? Next year’s race is only 364 days away—it’s never too soon to start training!
