If you're a fan of Zumba Fitness, now you can shake your stuff and do something good! We went to the Zumba Fitness Great Calorie Drive launch event last night in New York, where we sipped on mojitos (always good to loosen up before you start dancing!) and piña coladas and learned a little bit more about the drive.
Zumba Fitness has joined together with the World Food Programme (WFP) and Feeding America to combat world hunger. During the three-month campaign, Zumba Fitness is challenging you to "donate" the calories you burn in a class by downloading the Zumba Fitness mobile app, checking in to the nearest class, and moving! The calories will automatically be downloaded, and every 750 calories equals a meal for someone who needs it.
As part of the drive, Zumba Fitness filmed a PSA with multi-platinum selling artist and American Idol winner Phillip Phillips (featuring his new song, "Gone, Gone, Gone"), winning artist and DJ Lil' Jon, and world-famous Zumba instructor Kass Martin.
"This drive is really important to me. I go all over the world burning calories," Martin told SHAPE.com. "Now, we have a way to really donate those calories. Here, we're all eating and energized, but there are 870 million people worldwide who are suffering from hunger, who don't have enough to eat. It's great to be able to share what I love with fans—exercising, burning calories, having fun—but also help people actually put food on the table."
From now through June 13, fans are encouraged to shake off their calories in Zumba classes worldwide (click here to find a class near you), and purchase clothes or accessories from the special limited-edition line created for the campaign.
