A few weeks ago I shared my oatmeal recipe and mentioned that I mix dried blueberries into the mush. Well, that blog prompted the kind folks at Sunsweet to send me a few packages of their Antioxidant Blend ($4; at grocery stores), a mix of dried blueberries, cherries, cranberries, and plums. Now that may sound good to you, but I’ve got a confession to make: When it comes to fruit, I’m picky. I like bananas, but they have to be ripe (not a single speck of green is acceptable). Blueberries are delicious, but I’ve never been a fan of their cousins, the cranberry, blackberry, and raspberry. And I’d have to be stranded on a deserted island to eat a papaya. Needless to say, I didn’t have high hopes for this Sunsweet mix. But I love it! I mixed 1/8 cup (just 65 calories) into my oatmeal this morning and it was a delicious change from my usual blueberries-only bowl. And as I write this, my hand is digging into the bag for an afternoon snack fix. The Sunsweet blend is yummy, and it’s also loaded with antioxidants (thus, the name) that help slow age-related health problems. I’m sticking with my no-papaya stance, but I’m proud to say that I will no longer discriminate against cherries, cranberries, and plums.
