If you’re like us here at SHAPE, you’re super excited about the October 16 launch of Zumba’s latest video game, Zumba Fitness Core for Nintendo Wii and Kinect for Xbox 360 ($40; zumbafitnessgame.com).
The game lets you shake and shimmy your way through sweat-inducing routines as you mirror the moves of your favorite instructors, earning points and burning calories. I, myself, am extra excited about this game because…I’m in it!
Yep, that’s right, I’ll be grooving right there with you as one of the background dancer avatars. You can’t “be” me—the creators save that extra-special privilege for world-renowned Zumba teachers like Beto and Kass Martin—but I’ll be cheering you on as you perform popular samba, merengue, and salsa moves.
Depending on how much time you have, you can select a 20-, 45-, or 60-minute workout routine, or simply dance to a single song (there are 40 to choose from by artists including Tiesto and Bob Marley). Virtual Me gets every move right, but if you’re like Real Me and need a little more practice, start in Learn the Steps mode to get a full breakdown of Zumba’s six basic dance styles.
Like Zumba’s previous games, you’re guaranteed a total-body sweat-session, but this core-centric version is chockfull of routines that target your middle.
While my avatar definitely has my face, those generous video game gods gave her a better body (as one co-worker commented, “Look at your boobs!”). That means, to get my second-self’s super-flat abs, I’m going to have to play the game on the reg. But this party workout is so fun, you won’t find me complaining about that.
Here’s a sneak peek of my avatar in action:
