Being a girly girl (think ballerina, not boxer) I’ve never had much of an interest in kick boxing but after an intense fitness retreat training with world record holding Ironwoman Chrissie Wellington I felt like I could take on anything. So when the opportunity to try Empower Kick Boxing Boot Camp, lead by four-time World Champion Professional Female Boxer Jaime Clampitt came along I thought sure, why not? Plus, Jaime is the creator of the boxing program at Striking Beauties, the country’s first 24-hour all women’s boxing gym located in Attleboro, Massachusetts, perhaps a little less intimidating...
The class, held at Uplift Studios in NYC, another all-female gym, started with some heart pumping jump rope, and not the double bounce fun stuff you did on the playground. We’re talking Rocky-speed. Next, we strapped on one pound weighted gloves and started punching. Jamie broke down a few combinations that we built on throughout the lesson. Between each new punch combination we’d add in a little cardio like jumping jacks with a weighted ball.
The class was short but my arms were sore and I was breathing heavy. I admit it, I felt awkward with the punches at first but I did catch on and felt pretty good by the end of class. And I love those weighted gloves! I will be getting a pair for myself for this and other workouts. They made my arms burn in a whole new way.
The new Empower Boxing Boot Camp system comes with not just the gloves but a weighted ball and jump rope to help you get the most out of the 12-round DVD. The total workout takes about 30 minutes and I’m telling you, thanks to intense intervals, you will feel it in your muscles and torch some serious calories. Of course you will want to know that, yes, there is an abs section but thanks to lots of twisting and full body motions during the punch combinations, the workout engages your core from start to finish.
As an editor at SHAPE I have the chance to learn about the healthiest ways to cook, eat, and live from all sorts of experts but I’m also a single girl living in NYC with a busy schedule, active social life, and chocolate cravings. I’m here to share what works for me—and where I need a little help from you.
