Once a misunderstood diet, veganism continues to move more and more into the mainstream — it's even taken Hollywood by storm. Reasons for going vegan are probably more varied than you think: for some it's a sensitivity to meat and dairy products, while others cite animal cruelty or a strong dissatisfaction with factory farming. One thing most vegans can agree upon is that both their health and the planet's have improved since making the switch. Keep reading to find out which female celebs have gone vegan and why.

Natalie Portman was so impassioned about being vegan that she took to the Huffington Post to explain why she made the shift from a "twenty-year vegetarian to a vegan activist." For her, it was reading Jonathan Safran Foer's Eating Animals, which sheds light on how animals that make it to our plate are raised, killed, and processed.

Not only is Olivia vegan, she started a website — Wilde Things — explaining why she made the switch. Olivia's main reason for going vegan? To "boycott the torture factories." Olivia says it's just an added bonus that she has improved health and more energy.

Ginnifer Goodwin turned to a vegan diet after learning the drawbacks of eating factory-farmed meat. She's since turned two of her four parents vegan, and did so by showing how easy and enjoyable going vegan can be. Ginnifer says that being vegan makes food more enjoyable since "your taste buds will awake, and you can eat more without gaining weight!" Sounds like a win to us!

The unhealthy feeling Alanis had from gaining weight and eating processed food motivated her to make a major change, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s book Eat to Live gave her the tools to do it. Two years ago she went vegan; since then she's lost 20 pounds and participated in several long-distance runs, which include the NYC marathon.
