"Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs...Your mean comments don't make me want to change my body"
Supermodel and It-girl Gigi Hadid took to Instagram today to shut down body shamers in a lengthy post that she shared with her 6.5 million followers.
Highlights: "No, I don't have the same body type as the other models in shows... I represent a body image that wasn't accepted in high-fashion before, and I'm very lucky to be supported by the designers, stylists, and editors that I am: ones that know this is fashion, it's art; it can never stay the same. It's 2015. But if you're not one of those people, don't take your anger out on me," she wrote. (Speaking of change, see the Plus-Size Models We'd Love to See Become Victoria's Secret Angels.)
The 20-year-old told Daily Mail Australia earlier this year that when she first started fresh off her training as a volleyball player, modeling agencies weren't a fan of her athletic body and often told her she needed to lose weight.
Her Instagram speech continues, "Yes, I have boobs, I have abs, I have a butt, I have thighs, but I'm not asking for special treatment. I'm fitting into the sample sizes. Your mean comments don't make me want to change my body, they don't make me want to say no to the designers that ask me to be in their shows, and they definitely don't change the designers opinions of me."
While we're sad that a 20-year-old who fits into runway sample sizes actually has to defend herself for having curves, the stars of high-fashion runways have always been less-than-curvey women like Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. With this post, though, Hadid couldn't have done a better job pointing out the scrutiny models face today, while shutting down Internet bullies.
Hadid goes on to say, "If you don't like it, don't follow me, don't watch me, cause I'm not going anywhere." (As the face of campaigns for Maybelline, Guess, Tom Ford, and Victoria's Secret, we'd have to agree.) "I love that I can be sexy. I'm proud of it." You go, girl!
We're not the only fans. She's received likes, comments, and retweets from everyone from her BFF and fellow-model Kendall Jenner, to Khloe Kardashain, to Tyra Banks. We especially loved Ashley Graham's tweet: "Thank you @GiGiHadid for your love and realness on body love and acceptance. If you haven't yet, look at Gigi's IG post. It's compelling." Hadid summed things up succinctly: "I hope everyone gets to a place in their life where they'd rather talk about the things that inspire them over the things that bring others down. At least be open if not part of the change, because it's undeniably happening." Mic drop.
