The latest edition of the infamous Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue just hit newsstands and all we can say is… yowza! First-time SI cover model Kate Upton is clearly rockin’ those curves in an itsy-bitsy bikini that shines the spotlight on her oh-so-bodacious bod.

So, we admit—looking that good in a swimsuit had us racing to Upton’s personal trainer, Justin Gelband, to get the scoop on her SI-worthy workout routine.

When the star trainer met the model a year-and-a-half-ago, she walked in with a serious plan.

“Since the first day I met her, she wanted to come in and change the industry by saying curves are sexy,” Gelband says. “She’s such a great role model for all the young girls out there.”

After being crowned the “Rookie of the Year” title in last year’s edition, Upton increased her workouts with Gelband to five days a week for the entire three months leading up to her SI cover shoots.

Using his method called “ModelFIT”—customized to each and every client—the powerhouse trainer ran Upton through a mix of circuit training workouts that changed daily. An example routine would consist of some stretching exercises with elastic bands to work the back, chest, and legs, followed by Pilates, yoga, or kickboxing with work on the BOSU ball and core board, then stepups and moves on a step ladder.

Their circuits would include 4-5 bootcamp-style sets of 8-10 exercises and a 30-second rest period in between each move. Each set, however, would be slightly different to work multiple areas of the body. (Use this simple guide to create the perfect circuit workout for you.)  

“Kate is one in a million! She always puts in a whole-hearted effort to her workouts and is always ready to work,” Gelband says. “She would put in seven days a week if I let her! She knows how to get it done and is so humble, sweet yet tough, and educated at the same time.”

When it comes to diet, Gelband recommends the use of the Blood Type Diet, which finds the best nutritional plan based on your unique blood type.  

“Eat right for your type,” Gelband advises. “Your blood type has a lot to do with the way your body digests, processes, and metabolizes food. The method is 90 percent accurate.”

One thing’s for sure—for Upton and the rest of the stars he works with (just flip through SI and you’ll see at least a half-dozen of his stunning supermodel clients), results clearly show!

“My ModelFIT program is not so you can look like a model… but looking the best you can be for yourself,” Gelband says. “Get the best body for you! Don’t worry about what everybody else is doing.”
