Even if you don’t watch The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, if you read the tabloids at all, you’ve likely heard the name Brandi Glanville. The former model made headlines when her then husband actor Eddie Cibrian reportedly had a not-so-discreet extra-marital affair with country singer Leann Rimes, to whom he's now married.
Desperate to step out from the shadow of the scandal, the 39-year old stunner joined the cast of Bravo’s hit show, quickly sparking controversy when she accused co-star Kim Richards of being a ‘meth addict.’ She may have spiced up the show’s latest season by fighting with co-stars and flirting with their husbands, but after chatting with Glanville, it was easy to see that deep down, she’s sweet as sugar.
When she’s not on set, this California-born mom of two spends her days shuttling her boys to school and soccer practice, doing Pilates, and writing a cookbook. We caught up with Glanville to get the inside scoop on staying fit, her flawless skin, life after divorce, and more.
SHAPE: How do you respond to negative people and the ‘haters’ that have surfaced since your public divorce from Eddie and you joining the show?
Brandi Glanville (BG): People have said horrible things like I’m ‘plastic’ and I’m a bad mom. I think after three years of hearing it I have just developed a thick skin. I think it’s human nature, and I know what they say isn’t true so I’ve learned to not take it to heart.
SHAPE: You’re in such amazing shape but also such a busy mom. What’s your workout regimen like and how do you find time to stay in shape?
BG: After I drop my kids off at school, I head right to my Pilates trainer. I’ve had the same one for nine years! I started with her when I was pregnant with [my son] Mason. Before that, I had never even really worked out before! Once I got pregnant, everything kind of changed. Now I do three times a week and besides that, I stay active by going on bike rides with my kids, walking the dogs, or going for a hike near my home. I can’t even think about stepping foot on a treadmill!
SHAPE: As a former model, what’s the biggest stay-in-shape secret you’ve learned?
BG: I always take the stairs instead of an elevator! Some supermodel who shall remain nameless once told me to always squeeze your butt going up and down the stairs and it works! Wearing heels all day every day is also like a workout. It’s the simple things that make sense. Like if you’re going to the mall, park farther away and walk!
SHAPE: What’s your diet like?
BG: I don’t have a huge sweet tooth. I would rather have pasta and bread than Crème Brulee. If I get pasta, I don’t have dessert. It’s all about balance.
SHAPE: You also have amazing skin. What’s your skincare regimen?
BG: I get a spray tan every week. I also have issues like adult acne and Melasma (patches of skin discoloration) since I’ve had my kids, so I try everything—lasers, photo facials—and I wear hats all the time to protect myself from sun.
SHAPE: It seems there would be a lot of pressures in Beverly Hills to always look perfect. How do you deal with that?
BG: Having grown up modeling, I’m very self-aware of my physical appearance. It’s hard to grow older, especially in this town where everyone is perfect! They’re all 20 years old and gorgeous and I’m now in same dating pool as them, yikes, it’s really hard! This town makes you insecure. And yes, I’ll cop to a few plastic surgery procedures like Botox and fillers. I think everyone should do what makes them feel good but remember: Less is more!
SHAPE: Now that the season has ended for RHOBH, what are you up to?
BG: I love to cook. I grew up cooking for my family and learned a lot from my mom. We were a real ‘meat and potatoes’ family, a lot of comfort food, you know? So I took her recipes and put together a guide on ‘how to cook to keep your man’ (laughs). Obviously, we know how that turned out so I’ve changed the focus a bit. It’s now going to be about heart-healthier food that’s more affordable for single moms. So be on the lookout for that!
