Her soothing voice and hit songs are known to millions, but "Bubbly" singer Colbie Caillat seems to lead a relatively quiet life out of the spotlight. Now teaming up with a new all-natural skincare line, we caught up with 27-year old beauty to find out her favorite skincare secrets, how she stays inspired while songwriting, and how she stays in shape on tour.
SHAPE: Here’s something I always want to ask singers who are constantly touring. With being on the road and maintaining a busy schedule, how do you keep yourself healthy and in shape?
Colbie Caillat (CB): I eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I have been a vegetarian for a couple years now and am 95 percent vegan. I love the light feeling of not having meat in my stomach. Instead, I get my protein from vegetables, beans, lentils, rice, quinoa, and salads. I love to exercise outside in the fresh air and sun: hiking, swimming, stand-up paddleboarding, and jogging. Talking with my friends and family every day helps keep me grounded and connected to home. They are the most important things to me.
SHAPE: Now that you’re teaming up with Lily B. Skincare, tell us, what is your skincare regimen?
CB: I try not to wear makeup if I don't have to. I use moisturizer on my face both day and night, and I don't sleep with makeup on. My advice is don’t scrub your makeup off your eyes, be gentle.
SHAPE: Why did you want to get involved with [natural skincare line] Lily B.?
CB: Living a healthy, natural lifestyle is important to me. Lily B. products are all-natural with no added chemicals, and it’s a ‘simple’ line. When I met the founder, Liz Bishop, I fell in love with the company and what she stands for, and I wanted to be a part of something from the start. I used the products and fell in love with them before I even thought about signing on with Lily B. It was important for me to be a partner with a brand so that I could have an impact on what we do in bringing a great, all-natural skincare line to people.
SHAPE: Back to fitness, what are your favorite fitness routines?
CB: I like doing 25-minute intervals on the treadmill. I go back and forth with running and fast walking and keep changing the incline to high and low. Then I do 15 minutes of lifting light weights and all different kinds of sit-ups, squats, and stretches. I do this routine four days a week.
SHAPE: What keeps you motivated to stay in shape?
CB: I like how my body feels when I’m in shape; I love how it feels after I work out each day. Fitting in the clothes I like to wear comfortably and living a healthy lifestyle is important to me.
SHAPE: How do you get inspired while writing music and performing?
CB: Writing is my therapy. My feelings build up inside of me and then I sit down and write a song. It’s also a way for me to express my feelings about other people’s circumstances and the problems around me. I try to write about them in a general way so that everyone can relate.
SHAPE: What’s up next for you?
CB: Right now I’m on tour with my friends Gavin DeGraw and Andy Grammar. I’m also working on a Christmas album that will be released later this fall. I’ve recorded 10 standards and written six originals that I’m really excited to perform for my fans. This Christmas record has some songs not only for people who live in the snow, but for people who live at the beach too!
