Like most women, Simone Biles does not like being told to smile. (Olympic gymnasts—they're just like us!)
When the Dancing With The Stars judges began offering their critiques and praises after the gymnast's performance Monday night, host Tom Bergeron interjected to note, "I was waiting for you to smile at some of the compliments—you didn't." At that point, Biles did manage to smirk, but shut down the idea by saying: "Smiling doesn't win you gold medals." (Can we put that on a T-shirt, please?) As expected, her burn-worthy response won a stand in ovation from the crowd—and a figurative ovation via Twitter.

And just like that, every girl in America will start telling men who say to smile "smiling doesn't win you gold medals." YAS, GIRL #dwts

Following the show, Biles was still pretty worked up about the incident. "You don't know which wild card of sexy or happy they want you to bring, and you almost have to read their minds and find it," she told Entertainment Tonight in an interview backstage.
And while people expected her to be angry, Biles said Bergeron's comment just made her sad. "I had tears in my eyes. I almost ran to the bathroom at one point, but I pulled it together," she said. "I am trying and I am being honest. But if they don't see that, I don't know what else more I can do."
Even Biles's opponents agreed with her and showed their support. "She kept it real and sometimes the truth hurts," semi-finalist Val Chmerkovskiy told ET. "Smiles don't get you gold medals and I agree with her as an athlete and I side with her."
